ABOUT

Social Movement Contemporary Dance Theater (SMCDT) is a performing arts organization that uses dance arts as a form of social commentary.

We fulfill this by performing original work, providing educational opportunities, and collaborating with artists and organizations to explore cultural narratives and embody the full spectrum of human experience.

OUR STORY

Founded in 2019 by Artistic Director Elijah Alhadji Gibson, SMCDT was created to provide a space where contemporary dance serves as a catalyst for reflection, dialogue, and connection. Inspired by Gibson's original production The Black Card, the company was built on the belief that dance can address complex social issues while fostering empathy, understanding, and community.

WHAT WE DO

Today, SMCDT develops original repertory, presents performances throughout the region, and collaborates with artists, schools, and community organizations to expand access to dance. Through performances, arts education, touring, and community engagement, the company creates opportunities for audiences and participants to experience dance as both an artistic and social practice.

OUR IMPACT

In just a few seasons, SMCDT has grown into a multifaceted organization that presents original choreography, supports emerging and established artists, develops educational programs for students of all ages, and partners with communities throughout Texas and beyond. Every project reflects the company's commitment to artistic excellence, meaningful collaboration, and creating work that is culturally relevant and deeply human.
